#Ingredient Friday- Hyaluronic Acid

 #ingredientfriday Is back!

If you don’t know what Ingredient Friday is all about, you’re clearly not following us in Insta!  If you have FOMO on inside peeks at our Indie brand, and behind the scene pics -like seeing pics of the cutest pet Pig named Chance (ever), then you’ll definitely want to.

Today we’ll take a look at Hyaluronate Acid or Sodium Hyaluronate.

💦 HA is one of the main component of your skin space suit. It’s the thing that holds cells together to form living tissue. It gives your skin structure, it is responsible for that plump-hydrated look your favorite blogger has, and it plays a grand role in the wound healing process. It also decreases as we age, making us more susceptible to sagging, bagging and wrinkles. HA is also found in our joints, and helps provide lubrication.

Why and How do we use it in skincare, you ask?

Well, first off- it can bind up to 1000 times its weight in water! It works like a humectant ( like Glycerin only better and not as sticky),  and holds water molecules onto the surface of your skin to keep it nice and hydrated. This is also known as transepidermal water loss or TEWL for short. TEWL is the scientific term for the measurement of how much water is evaporated from skin.

Products that contain HA, are very effective at hydrating skin, which leads to a glowing, soft skin suit. There’s even some studies that have shown it is very good for healing wounds!

The important part to consider when purchasing products with HA, is checking the molecular weight and concentration. The molecular weight refers to its mass, or how big the HA molecule is. This is usually measured in daltons. The hyaluronic you want to use should be between 80,000 to 1,000,000 daltons (80 – 1,000 kDa). Studies show this to be the sweet spot. Higher weights won’t do much good and lower ones might cause inflammation.

Oshun Organics Rose Quartz Toner (find it here) uses plant-based hyaluronic acid, derived from the fermentation of yeast. We use 80-1,000 kDa weight, at .1%. If you’re looking for a Goddess Glow, have really dry or have really Oil skin, this product is for you. Spritz your face (and your hair if you have hair that does well with humectants) after cleansing and before your moisturizer. If you you oily skin, you may enjoy using this product as your daily moisturizer. Its occlusive- meaning it creates a nice light barrier like a cream or lotion would, and it’s Oil-Free, so you won’t be adding any additional oils which may just sit on the surface.

We also use the same weight and Concentration of HA in our New Moon Eye Gel which you can find here. This will function to decrease the look of fine lines by plumping the under-eye area. There’s also some Coffee Arabica Oil (CAFFEEEINNEE!!!) and soothing Chamomile in there, with some clinically-tested (we’ll talk more about that another day) Rice protein to help improve dark circles.
